BEIJING, April
29 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese basketball chief Xin Lancheng apparently disgusted
at media buildup on possible splitting of Yao Ming's NBA
salaries. The chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association
(CBA) advised media on Monday not to dwell on how the 7-foot-5
(2.25- meter) star's salaries will be split, warning too much coverage
on the matter "does no good to both Chinese basketball and Yao
Ming". Xin said the CBA has issued on April 5 two regulations,
which state the Chinese players overseas must hand over 30 percent of
earnings to the CBA, 10 percent to the players' home cities or provinces
and the remaining 10 percent to the State General Administration of
Sports. Shanghai Morning Post criticized the regulations as
" complicating and confusing Yao's NBA future" in its Wednesday's
edition. Yao is expected to be among the top five picks in
June 26's NBA draft. Another newspaper predicts if Yao plays
in NBA for 10 years, half of his earnings will be enough to host as many
seasons of the CBA league. "It is a common practice for
players overseas to hand over part of their earnings," said Xin. "Zheng
Haixia gave half of her earnings from WNBA." When asked if
the rule had applied to the two Chinese players already in the NBA, Dallas
Mavericks forward Wang Zhizhi and Denver Nuggets center Menk Bateer, Xin
said without further elaboration: "They are discussing with us."
