MANILA, April 15
(Xinhuanet) -- An earthquake with 4.8 intensity on the Richter scale shook
the southeastern Philippines but did not cause much damage or casualties,
the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said
Monday. The earthquake struck at noontime on Sunday, with
epicenter in Mati town of Davao Oriental province in the south, the
institute said in a press statement, adding that the quake was "too brief
and weak to cause panic." Tremors also hit surrounding
provinces including Surigao del Sur, Cagayan de Oro, and Camiguin Island
with intensity ranging from 1 to 4, the institute said.
Early reports here quoted the Hong Kong Observatory as reporting that the
earthquake was with the magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale. An earthquake
measuring 6.8 intensity jolted the southern Philippines in early March,
killing about 15 people while displacing another 27,000.
