BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhuanet) -- A huge illegal firearms shipment
case has just been cracked down in Xiamen in Southeast China's
Fujian Province, the English-Language newspaper China Daily
reports Tuesday.
The Xiamen police said Monday the illegal shipment was
discovered during a campaign targeting crimes committed on roads
and highways.
In the small hours of Sunday morning, police stationed on the
city's Jinshang Road stopped and checked a truck, on which they
discovered a large quantity of firearms and ammunition.
Police said they found a US-made M16 gun that can be used to
fire highly explosive shells, 12 home-made 56-1 tommy guns, and
five 40 MM high explosive shells as well as 318 rounds of
ammunition.
The three suspects seized on the spot are initially identified
as residents of Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous
Region in southwest China.
However, the three suspects claimed they knew nothing about the
firearms and ammunition. It is not clear where the firearms and
ammunition come from.
According to Chinese law, individuals are not allowed to
possess any type of firearms or ammunition, and punishment in such
cases is severe. Enditem
