HANOI, March 22
(Xinhuanet) -- Vietnam has been facing serious water management problems due
to uneven water resources distribution, despite the country's annual
rainfall ranging from 1, 000mm to 4,000mm, Vietnam's official news agency VNA
reported Friday. In some parts of the country, the dry
season lasts from six to nine months. As a result, water shortages have
seriously affected the production and the life of millions of local
people. How to sufficiently supply clean water to the Mekong
delta, Vietnam's rice bowl, during the flood season remains a headache
for the government. While clean water continues to be a
treasure for many people, it is still being wasted or polluted by others,
said VNA, adding that a number of water springs have shown signs of being
contaminated by organic substances or being salinated.
Over-exploitation of water resources in major urban centers is causing soil
erosion. Vietnam's drainage system has been used for both
domestic and industrial waste water. In addition, the treatment of waste
water has failed to meet fundamental requirements, making water
pollution a serious issue. Vietnam's health care sector in
coordination with other relevant agencies has exerted concerted efforts to
mobilize people to protect water resources and supply fresh
water. The UN General Assembly has designated Mar. 22 every year
as World Water Day with the aim of helping to raise awareness throughout
the global community of the urgent need to protect the world's diminishing
supply of fresh water. Enditem |
