KAMPALA, March 22
(Xinhuanet) -- A top officer of the Ugandan People's Defense Forces (UPDF)
who was killed in a rebel attack inside the Sudan has been flown back to
Uganda, Ugandan Army spokesman Shaban Bantariza told Xinhua
Friday. The body of Captain Khelil Magara, spokesman of the 4th
Division of UPDF, was flown back to Gulu, northern Uganda, on Thursday,
according to Bantariza. The late Magara was among a few UPDF
liaison officers deployed among the Sudan People's Armed Forces (SPAF) as
observers. An estimated 150 Lord Resistance Army
(LRA) rebels raided four Sudanese government army units between Nisitu and
Jabeleni, about 30 kilometers southeast of Juba city on Wednesday
morning. At least nine rebels were killed on the spot and about
two dozens SPAF soldiers have reportedly died during the
raid. Nisitu and Jabeleni, located in the Sudan government
controlled area, were home to LRA's camps before they shifted to Lubanga and
closer to the Ugandan border. Meanwhile, the UPDF has
intensified helicopter gunship patrols along Sudan-Uganda border since
Monday in an attempt to track LRA rebels.
