HIV/AIDS Epidemic Still Spreading in Vietnam

Xinhuanet 2002-03-14 11:26:12

HANOI, March 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The HIV/AIDS epidemic is still
spreading in Vietnam, with the total number of HIV-infected people
rising to 45,065 by the end of January this year, according to a
report of the local daily Vietnam News on Thursday.
Of this number, as many as 6,582 have developed AIDS and 3,618
AIDS sufferers died.
New statistics of the Health Ministry of Vietnam revealed that
84.7 percent of HIV carriers were male, and more than 60 percent
of infections were caused by intravenous drug use.
Most HIV infections are among young people. Among the cases
detected last year alone, 60.4 percent were aged 20-29.
In order to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, the country has
launched campaigns against HIV/AIDS and opened more health centres.
Vietnam presently has about 100 health centers dealing with HIV/
AIDS problems.  Enditem
