Xinhuanet 2002-03-09 11:49:30
COLOMBO, March 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Five people including a woman were
killed and 20 others injured when a hand grenade exploded at the
ruling United National Party(UNP) election rally at Kalubowila, a
suburb of capital Colombo on Friday night, police said.
It is reported that an unidentified gang member threw the hand
grenade at the UNP election rally.
This is the first explosion at the local election rally.
Officials said that separatist Tamil Tiger rebels who are
observing an indefinite ceasefire with government troops are not
involved in the attack.
Local elections are scheduled to be held later this month in
the country.  Enditem
