ADDIS ABABA,
February 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea
(UNMEE) said Tuesday that the issue of UNMEE's freedom of movement in north
of the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ) established 25 kilometers deep inside
Eritrea remained unresolved. The UNMEE's remark came
following the conclusion of the 11th meeting of the UNMEE Military
Coordination Commission (MCC) which was held on the same day in Djibouti,
the capital of Djibouti. According to a UNMEE press release,
Patrick Cammaert, the force commander of the UNMEE, said at the meeting that
since the last MCC meeting, the UNMEE had improved its monitoring of a set
of " blind spots" in north of the TSZ through a combination of
prior- notification visits, intensified patrolling along major and
secondary access routes, and a general improvement of working relations
with Eritrean liaison officers and local commanders on the
ground. As a result, the UNMEE had acquired a better overall
understanding of these restricted areas, said the release.
In the past months, the UNMEE has requested the Eritrean government to grant
the UNMEE freedom of movement in north of the TSZ, which was completely
rejected by the Eritrean side. Enditem |
