Xinhuanet 2002-01-30 18:12:08

””””BEIJING, January 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen reaffirmed here Wednesday that reuniting the motherland is one of China's three major tasks in the new century.

””””At a three-day meeting attended by directors of the Taiwan affairs offices across China which closed in Beijing Wednesday,Qian urged all relevant departments and all social sectors to givepriority to Taiwan affairs and to treat them responsibly and with a sense of urgency.

””””It is imperative to keep to the fundamental principle of "peaceful unification" and "one country, two systems" and to implement the eight-point proposal put forward by Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

””””China opposes any form of separatist activities conducted by people supporting the "Independence of Taiwan" and will guard against the trend of implementing "gradual independence of Taiwan",he said.

””””Active measures should be taken to keep close contact for economic and trade cooperation and the exchange of personnel between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, to promote the "threelinks" of trade, transport and postal service and to listen to theopinions of people in Taiwan on the cross-border relationship and the reunification scheme.

””””Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee, gave a report at the meeting. Enditem
