””””COLOMBO, January 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Sri Lankan former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar
has again cautioned against de-proscription of separatist Tamil Tiger rebels
until there is clear evidence of their bonafides in commencing peace talks
with the government, The Island newspaper said on Friday.
””””Kadirgamar was quoted as saying on Thursday that it should first be seen whether
the rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) will come for
talks, how the talks proceed and then decide whether to suspend or lift the ban
on them.
””””Commenting on the policy statement of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe
made on Tuesday, he said the prime minister has obviously realized the
complexity of the ethnic problem and that was why he had said that he will give
the matter of de-proscription of LTTE deep thought instead of rushing and
agreeing to it.
””””Kadirgamar said deep thought must be given to a decision and no precipitate
action should be taken.
””””He made similar remarks on Wednesday at Parliament debate on
Wickremeshinhe's policy statement.
””””The government has not made any decision regarding the lifting of ban on
Tamil rebels. Enditem
