Myanmar Opposition Leader Calls For Escalation of Dialogue

Xinhuanet 2002-01-04 17:28:38

ˇˇˇˇYANGON, January 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Myanmar opposition leader U Aung Shwe Friday called on the ruling State Peace and Development Council for escalating the dialogue between the two sides from theconfidence-building stage to a completely meaningful one at the table to settle the country's internal political crisis.

ˇˇˇˇA confidence-building dialogue between the two sides started inOctober 2000.

ˇˇˇˇU Aung Shwe, chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD), a winning political party in the 1990 general election, made thecall at a ceremony marking Myanmar's 54th Anniversary IndependenceDay with the absence of the party's general secretary Aung San SuuKyi who is still under house arrest by the government since September 2000.

ˇˇˇˇ"Instead of prolonged meeting at a confidence-building between the two sides, a meaningful dialogue at the table should be prompted," he said.

ˇˇˇˇAt the ceremony, NLD Vice-Chairman U Tin Oo also called for early face-to-face talks at the table, saying that "One day earlier the dialogue is realized, the earlier the benefit will be brought to the nation".

ˇˇˇˇThe meeting adopted some resolutions including demand of release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in the country and of rights of free activities of all legal political parties.

ˇˇˇˇMeanwhile, the Myanmar government has, since January 2001, released 202 NLD political prisoners including parliament members elected in the 1990 general election. Enditem
