COLOMBO, October 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Leader of the joint opposition
United National Front Ranil Wickremesinghe declared on Sunday that
his front would form a national government in the wider interest
of the nation when it wins the forthcoming parliamentary elections,
reported The Island newspaper on Monday. Addressing the convention of the main opposition United
National Party (UNP) in Colombo, he said the national government
would aim to recover the economy, end the long-running ethnic war,
restore law and order and dispel the present anarchy. Wickremesinghe said that he planned to establish an internal
ministry with an independent police commission to restore law and
order and also to have a special women's council for the
empowerment of women who contribute in a large way to the economy. He said that the top priority for the government is to find a
political solution to the ethnic war by devolving power to satisfy
the minority Tamil community while safeguarding the territorial
integrity of the country. The armed services will be upgraded and a special board will be
established to make military purchases free of political influence,
he said. In early September the ruling People's Alliance (PA) government
held discussions with the UNP on the possibility to form a
national government but both sides failed to reach an agreement.
The PA turned to the leftist JVP or People's Liberation Front
which promised to support PA during one year period of probational
government. Earlier this month President Kumaratunga dissolved the
Parliament and called the snap parliamentary elections due on
December 5 following the massive defections of her government MPs
before the voting of a non-confidence motion against her
government. Enditem
