BEIJING, August 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Alwyn Myburgh of South Africa
set a new Games record in the men's 400m hurdles while Chinese
sprinter Li Xuemei won the women's 200m gold at the 21st
Universiade on Friday. Myburgh overshadowed other athletes on track as he clocked 48.
09 seconds to beat the games previous mark of 48.44, set by Harry
Schulting of the Netherlands in 1979. "I'm very glad about the new record." said Myburgh, who himself
was even surprised at the result. "I really didn't expect it, and I just went out and ran my
normal race." Yevgenly Meleshenko of Kazakhstan finished second in 48.46,
while Chen Tien-Wen of Chinese Taipei clinched the bronze in 48.63. Li, the holder of Asian records in the women's 100m (10.79
seconds) and 200m (22.01), burst out of the blocks and surged to a
clear lead off the curve, clocking a winning time of 22.86 seconds. "I'm very happy, because this is my first international title,"
said the 24-year-old Li, who quit the women's 100m race to
concentrate on 200. Belgian Kim Gevaert took the silver in 22.94, with N.
Safronikava of Belarus third in 23.16. Polish Marcin Urbas was a lucky winner in the men's 200m as he
nipped Gennadiy Chernovol of Kazakhstan and G.C. Du Plessis of
South African in a photo finish to win his first medal in world
competition. Urbas crossed the line first in 20.56, while Chernovol had to
settle for the silver with 0.01 second behind. Plessis got the
bronze with a further 0.01 behind. "I think this is the thing which would change my career from
now (on)," said Urbas, who was shut out of the final at in the
Edmonton World Athletics Championships. Natasha Danvers of Britain led throughout the race to claim the
women's 400m hurdles title. She timed 54.94 seconds, shaving 0.01
second off her personal best. Malgorzata Pskit added a silver for Poland in 55.27 seconds and
Australian Sonia Brito grabbed the bronze in 55.72. Athletics powerhouses the United States only managed one gold
Friday through triple jumper Kenwood K. Bell. Bell's first effort of the competition was 15.11 meters, and he
went even further on his final jump at 17.22. Romanian Marian
Oprea jumped 17.11 on his fifth attempt to win the silver and the
bronze went to Brazilian Jadel Oprea at 16.92 meters. Ukrainian Vita Palamar, who finished fifth in the Edmonton

91. Defending champion Raul Bueno Duany from Cuba triumphed in the
most arduous competition of men's decathlon with 8069 points. V. Mykhaylenk of Ukraine snatched the silver with 8,019 points.
Chinese Qi Haifeng, who also had 8,019 points, was edged into
third place for he had less single events who points were higher
than Mykhaylenko's. Twelve gold medals will be decided on Saturday, the last day of
