ADDIS ABABA, August 24 (Xinhuanet) -- About 50 percent of the
hospital beds in Ethiopia's eastern Harar state are occupied by
HIV/AIDS patients, the Ethiopian News Agency reported here Friday. The pandemic is spreading at an alarming rate in the state and
471 of the 998 individuals who voluntarily underwent blood test in
the past 13 months were found HIV positive, Kemal Abdi, head of
contagious diseases control team of the state, was quoted as
saying. Over 10,000 people are reported to live with the virus in the
state while a multi-sectoral HIV/AIDS intervention program is
being conducted in the state. In the capital of Addis Ababa, about 50 percent of the hospital
beds are also believed to be occupied by HIV/AIDS patients. Over 2.6 million people in Ethiopia are reported to be living
with the virus that causes AIDS and there are 450,000 AIDS
patients and 750,000 AIDS orphaned children in the country.
