HARARE, June 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Three leading African politicians
are vying for the top post of Secretary-General of the newly
formed African Union (AU), Zimbabwe News Agency reported on
Wednesday. The new secretary-general will be elected at the Organization
of African Unity's (OAU) last heads of state summit scheduled to
be held in Lusaka, Zambia, next month. The choice will be between Economic Community of West African
States' Guinean Executive Secretary Lansana Kouyate, Cote d'Ivoire
's Foreign Minister Assy Amara and Namibian Foreign Minister Theo
Ben Gurirab. The Lusaka summit will formally transform the OAU into the AU,
a European Union-style continental body. The new AU boss will take over from outgoing OAU Secretary-
General Salim Ahmed Salim of Tanzania who does not seek to be
elected to head the new body. Political observers said that votes for the AU boss are likely
to be on regional basis, a situation that will favor Gurirab whose
country is a member of the Southern African Development Community.
