HAVANA, April 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Visiting Chinese President Jiang
Zemin and Cuban President Fidel Castro discussed bilateral ties
between their countries in formal talks here Friday and agreed to
further economic and trade cooperation. Castro recalled Jiang's Cuba visit in 1993, which was paid "in
the most difficult time of our country," he said, describing it as
a tour "we never forget." Castro said that since Jiang's last visit, "our relations have
entered the best period of history." "Your current visit will
definitely advance our bilateral ties," he added. The Chinese president said he was pleased to see the economic
recovery and active diplomatic efforts in Cuba after years of
arduous efforts made by the Cuban people. "The brave spirit demonstrated by the Cuban people in
safeguarding state sovereignty and independence and fighting
against outside interference and subversion has encouraged the
people in other developing countries," he said. Cuba was the first country in the western hemisphere, which
established diplomatic ties with China some 41 years ago.
Bilateral ties in recent years scored marked growth, Jiang said.
The two countries supported each other politically and
internationally while expanding their bilateral cooperation in
economic and trade fields, he pointed out. He spoke highly of the support given to China by the Cuban
government on such issues as human rights, Taiwan, Tibet and China
's entry into the World Trade Organization. Jiang also thanked the
Cuban side for its support to China's bid for hosting the 2008
Olympic Games and the 2010 World Fair. China will consistently support Cuba's just struggle in
safeguarding state sovereignty and independence, he said. Cuba is now one of China's major trade partners in Latin
America. Jiang pledged to further the existing economic and trade
links on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. Castro also briefed Jiang on the domestic situation of his
country and thanked China for its assistance to Cuba in various
fields. Jiang arrived here Thursday for a state visit as guest of
Castro. Cuba is the fifth leg of Jiang's six-nation tour to Latin
America. His last stop will be Venezuela. Enditem
