BUSAN, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- With two distance run gold medals to her credit,
Chinese Sun Yingjie has emerged the best women runner in the Asian Games.
The 23-year-old Sun captured the gold in the women's 10,000 meters in a new
Asian record time of 30:28.26 on Tuesday and won the 5,000 meters on Saturday in
14:40.41 seconds, a games record, just outside the world record of 14:28.09 set
by China's Jiang Bo in Shanghai in 1997.
"I did not run well as my legs were not comfortable," said Sun,who ran a
victory lap holding a Chinese national flag after the race.
"If there were a strong challenger in today's race, I could have finished
in a faster time," she added.
Sun didn't show any sign of fatigue after the run.
"The 10,000m didn't affect me physically. I'm a marathon runner and has been
trained for marathon."
Born into a poor farmer's family in Liaoning Province, China's stronghold
in long-distance run, Sun joined the national team in Beijing in November 1995.
Asked why she didn't join Ma Junren's team, Sun said that the maverick
coach thought she was not good enough to be one of his world and Olympic
champion runners.
"My specialty is not 10,000m or 5,000m but marathon," Sun told reporters.
"I expect a marathon gold tomorrow, and I am fully confident."
Smiling Sun said what she wanted to have an Olympic gold in 2004.
"I am very glad with Sun's result today. Gold medal is more important than
new records," said Sun's coach Wang Dexiian.
Wang said Sun was unwell and suffering a stomach problem when she joined
the national team in 1995 but now "she is in very good health and condition".
"Sun is at her golden age for running," Wang added. Enditem
